The Honey Harvest

The Honey Harvest reflects themes of inheritance, care, and quiet labor. My daughter serves as the model, symbolizing the passing of knowledge and tradition across generations. The painting is also rooted in my own experience as a beekeeper, a practice I deeply loved and one that gave me a profound appreciation for the rhythm and stewardship required to care for a hive.

This daughter often helped me harvest honey, and together we shared in the rewards of work that has connected people to the natural world for thousands of years. In many ways, beekeeping feels like participation in one of humanity's oldest guilds, a tradition built on patience, observation, and respect for the delicate balance between human hands and nature.

There is also a personal connection woven into the work. My first name, Melissa, derives from the Greek word for honeybee, a fitting coincidence that has long made me feel drawn to bees and the world of beekeeping.

The act of harvesting honey becomes both literal and symbolic, a meditation on patience, stewardship, and the sweetness that emerges from attentive care. Through the relationship between mother, daughter, and hive, the painting honors the quiet ways knowledge, responsibility, and wonder are passed from one generation to the next.
